Good morning,
Feel like we have always been in a dilemma and was looking for some advice. My son is 13, plays 14u, and is in 8th grade. He doesnt turn 14 until August....so after the season. We had played 12u last year and played more his age than grade until this year. I had always been concerned about level of comp bc he and his friends will be Freshman but he is usually the youngest.....he will be 14, they will be 15.
So this year we were able to find a team where he plays 14u AA. We've had terrible luck with orgs and have moved nearly yearly since 10u. So he skipped 13u and can hold his own hitting and throwing at 14u AA. Pitching he does just fine, but doesnt have the velo of the bigger, strong kids. He plays 3rd but behind coaches kid. He can also catch a bit, second year doing so, but doesnt get alot of oppo there.
The org he plays for is good at a high level but not at this location. They are more concerned and take some of our players to play on their 14 Majors team.
My son struggles academically too but I just cant get to the point of holding him back. Anyone else in a situation like this where he should really be in 7th grade and 13u but isnt and will have a very hard time ever getting to play with kids 4-7 inches taller and 50-60 lbs heavier? Def dont like the idea of holding him back to for sports and missing his friends who would be Freshmen. I just tell him to keep working and hope the puberty lasts few more years...but its hard to watch. Then we need more reps at spots so we can try out somewhere else where he can play.
Anyone ever play Freshman HS level, and stay down to play 14 select team but still with 2026 grad date? Thank you
