Hey, new to the board. I have one son who is just starting showcase and another who is in 11U age group.
If this isn't a great place to ask showcase questions, no problem. If you know of any other good forums to ask some general questions about what showcase should be, please let me know! Trying to get some clarity around what I have understood showcase baseball to be and what I'm seeing from our current team.
I'm currently awaiting a board approval on another forum to ask similar questions, but I'm trying to be objective about this. Thanks in advance for any advice, feedback.
My context and question:
I have been told and I've seen through some research that showcase baseball has a main intent for kids to get exposure and reps at positions they generally play. And if you play in some showcase tournaments, maybe you'll get seen by a college recruiter or two. Maybe you'll get your name, info Tweeted out if you're lucky.
But, from what I've seen through 4 tournaments is there have been 4 kids who have not moved from their spots at all. And a couple other kids get a ton of playing time and regular pitching spots.
I'm not saying my kid should play every inning at all. But, he'd really like to get some run at the spots he normally plays (from high school, past travel with success). I've been told by many parents with kids in showcase programs that their kids will be informed of when/where their kids will play. And they don't just rotate them into a different spot based on the randomness of "what's left".
I hate the notion of daddyball because I feel like it's overused, but 2 of these kids who never move are coach's sons. The kids who don't move are by no means perfect, but they play their spots all the time and only move if one of them has to pitch or is tired.
It feels like this is a travel ball team that is just playing showcase tournaments. Like I said, our expectations are not for our son to play all the time. But just to rotate into the spots that he normally plays. And if he fails, he fails...he'll have to bounce back and know what to work on. But, the 4 or 5 kids who play all the time, never move, no matter how poorly they might be playing. My son has reached out to head coach to ask what he can do to get more time and it wasn't received well and actually any playing time he had has been reduced. My inclination is for him to honor his summer obligation and then we move on. But I guess I just want to be clear about what showcase is supposed to be.
Thanks.
